Timeline

  1. Gather & apostille documents

    3-4 weeks

    Collect all required documents including criminal background check, financial proof, and medical certificate. Have them apostilled and officially translated into Spanish.

  2. Obtain health insurance quote & policy

    1 week

    Secure a private health insurance policy from a Spanish-authorized provider with full coverage and no copays. Many providers offer policies specifically for visa applicants.

  3. Book consulate appointment

    2-6 weeks

    Schedule an appointment at your nearest Spanish consulate. Wait times can be long, especially in popular locations like the US east coast.

  4. Submit application at consulate

    1 day

    Attend your appointment in person with all original documents and copies. The consulate will review your file and collect the application fee.

  5. Wait for approval

    Up to 3 months (usually 4-8 weeks)

    The consulate processes your application. Processing times vary widely by location. You may be asked for additional documents.

  6. Collect visa, travel, apply for TIE

    Within 30 days of arrival

    Pick up your visa, enter Spain within the validity window, register at the town hall (empadronamiento), and apply for your TIE residence card at the immigration office.
