Timeline

Estimated total: 2-4 months

  1. Gather & apostille documents

    2-4 weeks

    Collect all required documents including criminal background check, degree or experience letters, and have them apostilled and officially translated into Spanish.

  2. Book consulate appointment

    1-4 weeks

    Schedule an appointment at your nearest Spanish consulate. Wait times vary significantly by location and season.

  3. Submit application at consulate

    1 day

    Attend your appointment in person with all original documents and copies. Staff will review your application and collect the fee.

  4. Wait for approval

    Up to 20 business days (often 1-2 months)

    The consulate processes your application. You may be contacted for additional documentation during this period.

  5. Collect visa and travel to Spain

    1-2 weeks

    Pick up your approved visa from the consulate and make travel arrangements to Spain within the visa validity window.

  6. Apply for TIE card after arrival

    Within 30 days of arrival

    Once in Spain, apply for your Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE) at the local immigration office and register at your local town hall (empadronamiento).
